A Gentle Introduction to Memetic Algorithms

چکیده
The generic denomination of ‘Memetic Algorithms’ (MAs) is used to encompass a broad class of metaheuristics (i.e. general purpose methods aimed to guide an underlying heuristic). The method is based on a population of agents and proved to be of practical success in a variety of problem domains and in particular for the approximate solution of NP Optimization problems. Unlike traditional Evolutionary Computation (EC) methods, MAs are intrinsically concerned with exploiting all available knowledge about the problem under study. The incorporation of problem domain knowledge is not an optional mechanism, but a fundamental feature that characterizes MAs. This functioning philosophy is perfectly illustrated by the term “memetic”. Coined by R. Dawkins [52], the word ‘meme’ denotes an analogous to the gene in the context of cultural evolution [154]. In Dawkins’ words:

Genetic and Memetic Algorithms for Sequencing a New JIT Mixed-Model Assembly Line
This paper presents a new mathematical programming model for the bi-criteria mixed-model assembly line balancing problem in a just-in-time (JIT) production system. There is a set of criteria to judge sequences of the product mix in terms of the effective utilization of the system. The primary goal of this model is to minimize the setup cost and the stoppage assembly line cost, simultaneously. B...
متن کاملSOLVING A STEP FIXED CHARGE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM BY A SPANNING TREE-BASED MEMETIC ALGORITHM
In this paper, we consider the step fixed-charge transportation problem (FCTP) in which a step fixed cost, sometimes called a setup cost, is incurred if another related variable assumes a nonzero value. In order to solve the problem, two metaheuristic, a spanning tree-based genetic algorithm (GA) and a spanning tree-based memetic algorithm (MA), are developed for this NP-hard problem. For compa...

Introduction: Meta-heuristic and combined algorithms have a great capability in modelling medical decision making. This study used neural networks in order to predict Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) among high risk individuals. Methods: This study was an applied research. Data from 545 individuals (diabetic and non-diabetic), in Diabetes Clinic of Hamedan University of Medical Sciences, we...
متن کاملA Memetic Algorithm for Hybrid Flowshops with Flexible Machine Availability Constraints
This paper considers the problem of scheduling hybrid flowshops with machine availability constraints (MAC) to minimize makespan. The paper deals with a specific case of MAC caused by preventive maintenance (PM) operations. Contrary to previous papers considering fixed or/and conservative policies, we explore a case in which PM activities might be postponed or expedited while necessary. Regardi...
متن کاملMemetic Algorithms
Memetic Algorithms have become one of the key methodologies behind solvers that are capable of tackling very large, real-world, optimisation problems. They are being actively investigated in research institutions as well as broadly applied in industry. In this chapter we provide a pragmatic guide on the key design issues underpinning Memetic Algorithms (MA) engineering. We begin with a brief co...
